The
Hurricanes had three new starters in the secondary in their opener thanks to
graduation and suspension, and that inexperience showed up against the Terps,
as lack of communication and poor technique that allowed receivers to get loose
in the back end. S Vaughn Telemaque, the only returning starter, showed
above-average range and ball skills, but CBs Mike Williams and Brandon McGee
were caught out of position several times and must be better. Ohio State TE Jake
Stoneburner has thrived near the red zone, but the Buckeyes are still
searching for a target to step up on the outside in the absence of WR DeVier
Posey (suspension). WRs Corey Brown,
Evan
Spencer and Devin Smith
have to be more consistent to capitalize on any big-play opportunities the
inexperienced Miami secondary presents.
John Simon has been disruptive on the opposite end with snap anticipation and initial quickness. The Buckeyes' entire front seven must step up this week against a physical Miami offensive line. Despite the absence of massive LT Seantrel Henderson (back), the line did a nice job firing off the ball and opening creases for RBs Lamar Miller and Mike James against Maryland. Ohio State's linebackers have to be disciplined with their run fits, especially on the back side against Miller, who has above-average vision, a natural feel for the cutback and a second gear he gets to quickly. Buckeyes OLBs Etienne Sabino and Andrew Sweat must show great patience when runs flow away because Miller has the long speed to go the distance if they overpursue and open backside running lanes.
• Ohio State's secondary lacks the athleticism and top-end speed that Buckeyes fans have grown accustomed to seeing in the back end. CBs Dominic Clarke and Bradley Roby gave too much cushion and appeared hesitant against Toledo, but the return of Travis Howard will give the Buckeyes an added boost against a fast, talented Miami perimeter. WRs Travis Benjamin and Phillip Dorsett are speedsters who have the ability to rip the lid off the defense, while LaRon Byrd and Allen Hurns possess very good size and body control. Expect offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch to dial up plenty of downfield throws to test the Buckeyes' secondary. However, the Hurricanes must shore up an offensive line that has some leakage in Week 1, because Heacock will bring a complex zone blitz package.
