Ohio State’s
100th year of football in 1989 was a rebuilding year as second-year
coach John Cooper slowly progressed from the disastrous 1988 campaign, which
saw Ohio State post a losing record for the first time since 1966. The 1989 season will be most remembered for
the comeback from a 31-0 deficit against Minnesota, which at the time was the greatest
comeback in college football history. During
this 25-season span, the Buckeyes would go 208-66-5, which included a national
championship in 1968 and they would go 152-39-1 in the Big Ten, while racking
up 12 Big Ten titles. Ohio State would
also go 2-6 in the Rose Bowl, 1-0 in the Orange Bowl, 0-1 in the Sugar Bowl,
0-1 in the Gator Bowl, 1-1 in the Fiesta Bowl, 1-0 in the Liberty Bowl, 1-0 in
the Holiday Bowl, 1-0 in the Citrus Bowl, 1-0 in the Cotton Bowl, and 0-1 in
the Hall of Fame Bowl. This 25-season
span also witnessed the only two-time winner of the Heisman Trophy, Archie
Griffin in 1974-75. After 100 years of
football, Ohio State’s record stood at 626-256-50 and 332-127-20 in the Big
Ten.
