Despite sloppy red-zone offense and paying against an
inspired foe, Ohio State managed to pull away for a four-score win over the
plucky Bobcats of Ohio University. Ohio
State scored touchdowns on just two of their six trips to the red zone and
Julian Sayin was intercepted twice, but they finished the game with 24 unanswered
points to pull away for a 37-9 win.
Despite
the two picks, Sayin completed 25-of-32 passes for 347 yards and three
touchdowns, two of which were deep throws to Jeremiah Smith and Carnell
Tate. Speaking of Jeremiah Smith, Smith
had one of his best games, hauling in nine catches for 153 yards and the
aforementioned touchdown. For some
strange reason, the Bobcats left him with single coverage most of the time,
which, for any defense, is suicide. When
Smith wasn’t open, Carnell Tate was, as he hauled in five catches for 101 yards
and a touchdown. TEs Max Klare and Will
Kacmarek were also active, each catching two passes, with Klare scoring the
first touchdown of the game. The running
game has an up-and-coming star. Freshman
Bo Jackson led the way with 109 yards on just nine carries and James Peoples
looked to be running harder than in the first two games, averaging 6.7 yards on
his seven carries.
On the
defensive side, Arvell Reese continues to impress as he once again led the way
with seven tackles and a sack. Caleb
Downs and Sonny Styles each had six stops, and Jaylen McClain played his best
game with five tackles and a pass breakup.
The defense continues to play strong as they limited a potent Bobcat
offense with a dual-threat quarterback to a mere 181 total yards and 68 yards
on the ground, most of which came on an Ohio drive in the fourth quarter with
the game already out of reach and which ended in no points. The defense suffered only one lapse which
resulted in a 68-yard touchdown play which was more of a fluke than anything
else.
Ohio
State enters into their first idle week with a visit to Seattle to take on the
Washington Huskies on September 27.
