MY THOUGHTS…..MICHIGAN STATE
The Ohio State Buckeyes kicked off B1G play with a
dominating 385-7 win over Michigan State in East Lansing.
The
highlight of the game was the UNBELIEVABLE one-handed catch by Jeremiah Smith
he hauled in from Devin Brown (who came in for a few plays when Will Howard was
banged up) and turned it into a 17-yard score, giving OSU a 24-7 lead at the
half. It was part of his five-catch 83-yard
performance. Emeka Egbuka led the
receivers with seven grabs for 96 yards and a score. Gee Scott Jr. also played a role in the
passing game, hauling in three receptions, one of them for a touchdown. TreVeyon Henderson led the ground effort with
69 yards. Quinshon Judkins picked up 18
and Will Howard added the final tally on his six-yard run on a read option that
reminded folks of J.T. Barrett. Against
Michigan State’s 13th-ranked rushing defense nationally, the
offensive line blocked well in the run game, generating 5.3 yards per carry.
The
defense started a bit slow for the second straight week as Michigan State
generated 186 yards and 6.9 yards per play in the first half. But they came away with two turnovers in the
red zone. The defense stymied the
Spartans after halftime, holding their offense to a mere 60 total yards. Freshman Caleb Downs led the way with six
tackles, along with Sonny Styles who also picked up a sack. Jack Sawyer recovered a fumble that stopped
an MSU scoring threat and backup Mitchell Melton recorded the first two sacks
of his career. The opportunistic defense
held the Spartans to a mere 47 yards on the ground and two-of-nine on third
downs.
Next
week, the Iowa Hawkeyes will come to the ‘Shoe for a 3:30 kickoff.
