The explosive Ohio State offense was on fire and took
advantage of Purdue miscues to hang 59 on a decent Purdue defense. After two
consecutive games of red-zone struggles, the Buckeyes were 5-of-6 in the red
zone; four of those scores were touchdowns. After sitting out last week,
Garrett Wilson came back with a vengeance with 177 yards of total offense and
four touchdowns. The run game came alive from the second quarter on, as Miyan
Williams saw his first extended action in a while and churned out 117 yards,
while TreVeyon Henderson managed 98 with a 57 yarder to the house. Henderson
now has 1028 yards becoming just the fourth true freshman in school history to
top 1000 yards. C.J. Stroud completed a career-best 82 percent of his throws
(31 of 38) and tied his career high with five touchdown passes. Purdue had the
14th best passing defense in the country and were giving up only 185
yards per game, but Stroud picked them apart to the tune of 361 yards. In his
nine games (he was out for the Akron game), Stroud has thrown for 30 touchdowns
against five interceptions, and he’s taken just seven sacks. Jaxson
Smith-Njigba now has 1027 receiving yards, becoming just the sixth receiver in
school history to top the 1000-yard mark.
The defense was superb against the run, limiting the Boilers
to 91 yards, but were hurt, at times, against the pass, giving up 390 yards and
four touchdowns to Purdue’s Aiden O’Connell. O’Connell was good with the quick
releases, but the defense didn’t get any sacks. Purdue’s David Bell managed 11
catches, matched up against Denzel Burke and sometimes Cam Brown. But those 11
catches went for only 103 yards, meaning they kept Bell from getting many yards
after the catch. Burke led the team in tackles with 11 and Bryson Shaw had eight.
Jerron Cage and Palaie Gaoteote both recovered fumbles that led to touchdowns.
Next up will be a tough test against a top-ten Michigan
State team with one of the premier running backs in the country and a balanced
offense that should be a challenge to the defense.
