The Buckeyes
have their toughest contest yet this season in a road trip to always tough
Madison to play the Wisconsin Badgers.
They’ll have to deal with the always raucous Camp Randall crowd at night
along with a tough Wisconsin defense.
OHIO STATE OFFENSE v WISCONSIN
DEFENSE: Wisconsin’s
defense comes in having allowed only three touchdowns and two field goals in
three games against top ten opponents this season. The Badgers defensive line is led by a couple
of good bookends in juniors Connor Sheehy and Chikwe Obasih. A three-year starter, Sheehy comes in with
nine tackles and a sack while Obasih, another three-year starter, has five tackles,
a sack, and a fumble recovery. Sophomore
Olive Sagapolu is developing into a very capable NT, anchoring that defensive
line and coming off his best game two weeks ago with five stops against
Michigan. Wisconsin has had solid play
from their linebacker unit, led by junior ILB Jack Cichy with 35 tackles, three
tackles for loss, and a sack. Sophomore
T.J. Edwards, lining up next to Cichy, has also impressed, with 28 tackles, two
tackles for loss, a sack, and an interception.
The outside linebackers are called upon a lot to help contain passes in
the flat and help out on wide run contain and they have a couple of good ones
in juniors Garrett Dooley and T.J. Watt.
Dooley comes in with 13 tackles and a sack, while Watt has been on a
tear this season ,second on the team with 29 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss and
5.5 sacks. The secondary has held up
quite well, with a mixture of juniors and seniors. Senior CB Sojourn Shelton is the unquestioned
leader of this bunch, chipping in 14 tackles and an interception. The rest of the secondary is in good hands
with junior Derrick Tindal at the other corner position, junior D’Cota Dixon at
SS and senior Leo Musso at FS.
It’s a
defense that has forced ten turnovers (7 interceptions and 3 fumbles), and
gives up only 90.4 yards on the ground.
The Buckeyes will need to do better in the passing game than they did
last week and utilize Curtis Samuel and Dontre Wilson more in the offensive
game plan and try to get them out on the edge where their speed will be an
advantage.
OLB T.J. Watt
OHIO STATE DEFENSE v WISCONSIN
OFFENSE: Wisconsin
has always prided itself on a tough running style and being tough in the
trenches and this year is no different.
Senior RB Corey Clement continues the Badger tradition of hard-nosed
running backs, with 319 yards and five touchdowns thus far. His running will be a key to keep pressure
off of redshirt freshman quarterback Alex Hornibrook, who comes in completing
56 percent of his passes for four touchdowns, but went only 9 for 25 against
Michigan. The Badgers will attempt to
test the Ohio State secondary with a pair of speedy receivers in junior Jazz
Peavy and senior Rob Wheelwright.
Wheelwright leads the team with 18 receptions for 274 yards while Peavy
has hauled in four catches for 54 yards.
The Badgers have historically had tight ends good at catching the short
and medium throws and junior Troy Fumagalli has done a good job at living up to
that, with 16 receptions for 181 yards.
The offensive line was thought to be a concern with four sophomores,
however, they have done an adequate job thus far, with Jacob Maxwell, Beau
Benzschawel, Brett Connors, and Michael Deiter providing good run blocking for
Clements thus far. Junior Ryan Ramczak
mans the LT position.
Ohio State’s
defense hasn’t allowed a rushing touchdown this season and the Badgers’
run-heavy offensive game plan figures to give that a good test. They must be able to plan to substitute quite
a bit along the defensive line to keep fresh players in there while the young
secondary plays their assignments and not get fooled on all the play-action
fakes this offense likes to run.
RB Corey Clement
SPECIAL TEAMS: Andrew Endicott has been penciled
in as the kicker for this game. The
senior has connected on his sole field goal try from 41 yards out. Anthony Lotti has averaged 37.5 yards per
punt with a long of 48.
SUMMARY: Playing in Camp Randall Stadium at
night will be quite a bit tougher than playing at Oklahoma. The Badgers have given the Buckeyes fits,
with a win over a top-ranked Ohio State team in 2010 and taking Ohio State to
OT in 2012 before falling. However this
year, the Badgers are currently eighth in the conference in rushing at 161.6
yards per game, albeit against decent defenses in LSU and Michigan. Ohio State is second in the conference
defending the run , so this is where the game will likely be decided. If Ohio State’s defense can force Hornibrook
to throw more than 20-25 times, it will almost assure a victory.
OHIO STATE 27,
WISCONSIN 16
